Creating a Comfortable Outdoor Living Space with Stone

Creating a Comfortable Outdoor Living Space with Stone

Now imagine that you get to enjoy that weekend relaxing in your beautiful outdoor living space, designed with natural stone.

Forget for a moment that we’re supposed to get snow soon, and instead picture the coming warmer months. The days start getting longer, flower start peeking out, and suddenly it’s that first spring weekend where instead of just being ‘not cold’ it’s actually warm. Now imagine that you get to enjoy that weekend relaxing in your beautiful outdoor living space, designed with natural stone.

Patios

Let’s start from the ground up, because every relaxing area needs a good foundation. Consider the sophisticated beauty of slate tiles or the rustic ‘English garden’ aesthetic of cobbles or flagstone for your patio material. All of these materials are strong and durable and you could use the resulting patio as any sort of outdoor living space, from an outdoor dining room to a poolside lounge.

Outdoor Kitchen

Once the warm weather hits, no one wants to be stuck in the kitchen. Yes, bring on the barbecue! Or even better, create an outdoor culinary oasis where you can relax, socialize, and keep an eye on the cooking all at the same time. Make your outdoor kitchen a statement piece with stone veneer as cladding around grills, appliances, and prep areas.

Fireplace

If you really want your outdoor living space to be usable year-round, a built-in fireplace is a way to go. They provide light, warmth, and ambiance. Stone is a natural choice for an outdoor fireplace. You can use a stone veneer to encase the fireplace structure and you can also use the stone to build out adjacent seating.

Hot Tubs and Pools

If some or all of your pool and hot tub is above grade, natural stone is an excellent choice for finishing the look. While you could use concrete, the stone is more sophisticated and beautiful.

Retaining Walls and Paths

While retaining walls and paths are not necessarily part of your living space exactly, they’re still very important. Your new oasis may not be up against the house and a beautiful cobble walkway will lead guests where they need to go to reach it. Walkways also keep people from cutting across your lawn and garden areas. Retaining walls can also help you make the most of your space by leveling areas, channeling runoff, and preventing erosion. Solid stone blocks add stability and visual interest to these structures so they blend seamlessly into the rest of your design.
